Everything we make at Booja-Booja is vegan. All our vegan chocolates and vegan ice creams carry the official Vegan Trademark. But have you ever wondered what the trademark actually means, where the logo comes from and who awards it? If so, today’s your lucky day.
The Vegan Trademark ‘sunflower’ logo was launched in 1990 by The Vegan Society. It is the oldest and largest vegan verification scheme in the world. Initially it appeared on just five products but today, more than 70 years on, it’s a globally recognized standard for products that are free from animal ingredients and animal testing. More than 15,000 products were registered in 2020 alone. In April 2021 The Vegan Society registered its 50,000th product and the numbers are still rising.
The Vegan Trademark is awarded to individual products, not manufacturers or companies. This means that every time we develop a new flavour of vegan chocolate truffle or a new variety of vegan ice cream, it is carefully checked and its ingredients vetted to ensure that it’s suitable for vegans. The checks are carried out by a team of independent vegan experts who not only ensure that there are no animal or animal-derived ingredients but also that there’s been no animal testing and that high kitchen and hygiene standards are met. Only then can a product be awarded the Vegan Trademark.
The Vegan Society was formed in 1944 and its founders are responsible for inventing the word ‘vegan’. It later became a registered charity and a limited company but throughout its history its aim has remained the same; to promote and support “a way of living which excludes - as far as is possible and practicable - all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals”.
Today, with more and more people embracing vegan lifestyle choices and wanting to find vegan products they can trust, the Vegan Society’s little sunflower logo has never been more important. Here at Booja-Booja we are very proud that every single one of our vegan chocolates and vegan ice creams is registered and proudly displays the Vegan Trademark.
